Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds

Long Way Down is a great read for those who seek depth in a novel but have little time to devote to a lengthy text. Reynolds describes the cycle of gun violence in an emotional story about a teen trying to avenge his brother's death. However, he is confronted by the ghosts of loved ones who have been victims of gun violence. Personally, I'm drawn to novels written in verse because I can become so invested in a character with the use of so few words.
